Set at the foot of Helm Crag, Lancrigg is surrounded by 31 acres of private gardens, woodland and open countryside. It’s the sort of place where you can spend an entire wedding day without ever feeling the need to go anywhere else. The combination of its historic country house, the beautifully restored Lakeland barn and extensive grounds offers an incredible variety of settings. There are intimate corners, winding woodland paths and views towards the surrounding fells. Unlike some venues where the best photographic opportunities are limited to one or two locations, Lancrigg gives us room to explore. A few minutes wandering through the gardens can produce photographs that feel completely different from those taken outside the barn or against the dramatic landscape. The scenery changes beautifully at the Lancrigg throughout the year, too. Spring brings fresh greenery and blossom, summer offers long evenings and golden light, autumn delivers incredible colours, while winter weddings have a wonderfully atmospheric feel.
Relaxed Weddings at Lancrigg – Real Moments
But what I particularly love about Lancrigg is its atmosphere. It feels relaxed, welcoming and wonderfully unpretentious. There’s a sense that weddings here are about spending time with the people you love, rather than following a rigid schedule. That makes it perfect for natural photography. The best images rarely happen when everyone is standing in a line and looking at a camera. They’re the unexpected moments. Laughter around the drinks reception, children exploring the Lancrigg’s gardens, friends catching up and those little glances between the two of you.
The beautiful surroundings of the Lancrigg certainly help, but it’s the people and the atmosphere that bring a wedding to life. My approach is to capture all of this as it happens. I’ll make the most of Lancrigg’s incredible surroundings, but I won’t spend your wedding day dragging you away from your guests for endless posed photographs. You deserve to enjoy your celebration. Not spend it performing for a camera. The result is a collection of honest, artistic and timeless photos.
